Our Art Teacher, Carolyn Braden coordinated a fantastic art show that gathered the attention of several local artist and sculptors, as well as KET and the Courier Journal. We were featured in the Southwest Neighborhood section of the CJ Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Go to the photos page for our personal photos, or for Courier Journal pics, click here.
Byck Elementary is offering the public a chance to see the work of its up-and-coming artists.
The Byck Elementary School Art Show will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at the school, 2328 Cedar St. Hundreds of pieces of student-created art in various forms will be displayed in the gymnasium.
Art teacher Carolyn Braden said each grade began work last fall on a specific type of artwork in preparation for the free show.
Kindergartners, for example, have worked on creating clay African animals, and first-graders have created mixed-media pieces using crayons, paint, cupcake liners and other materials. They also have lent their own interpretations to 19th-century neo-Impressionist French painter Georges Seurat's "Vase of Flowers."
Second-graders will be showcasing castles made of cardboard and other materials, and third-graders will display papier-mâché pigs created from two-liter bottles.
Fourth-graders have created soft stone totem heads made of plaster, vermiculite and water.
Byck's fifth-graders have worked on plaster African folk-art masks.
Braden, who began teaching at Byck this year, said she brought the art show idea from her stint at Notre Dame Academy, where it was well-received.
Given the talent of Byck's students, Braden said she expects tomorrow's event to go well.
"There is so much talent. Children from all over Louisville attend here," she said.
The event also will feature a performance by Byck music teacher and local musician John Mann, and the Byck Blues Band, which is comprised of student musicians. Surprise musical guests are also expected to attend.
Before the event, local art teachers and teachers will award prizes that will be displayed next to the winning works.
